FW: Zerbin Singleton Wins The Prestigious 2007 Disney¹s Wide World of Sports Spirit Award

U.S. Naval Academy¹s Singleton Never Loses Sight of New Frontier

Aspiring Astronaut Wins Prestigious 2007 Disney¹s Wide World of Sports
Spirit Award

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Nov. 27) U.S. Naval Academy slot back Zerbin
Singleton has displayed an unwavering determination, overcoming a serious
car wreck and a series of family tragedies to follow his dream of one day
becoming a part of the U.S. space program. For his courage and perseverance,
Singleton is this year¹s recipient of Disney¹s Wide World of Sports Spirit
Award, given each year to college football¹s most inspirational figure.
Disney¹s Director of Sports & Recreation Planning and New Event Development
Kellen Winslow, an NFL Hall of Famer, will present the award to Singleton
during The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards at the Atlantic Dance
Hall at Walt Disney World Resort on Thursday, Dec. 6. The 17th annual
awards show is scheduled for 7:30-9:30 p.m. ET and will be televised live on
ESPN.

Singleton, a senior aerospace engineering major from Decatur, Ga., overcame
several obstacles growing up, including leaving Alaska after his mother¹s
incarceration following a parole violation. He met his father for the first
time as a senior in high school, then was forced to cope with his father¹s
suicide a year later.

At age 11, Singleton found stability in Decatur, Ga., where he lived with
his cousins and quickly developed a natural aptitude for school and
athletics. A three-year football letterman at Columbia High School (Decatur,
Ga.), he was also elected Senior Class President, along with President of
CHS¹s National Honor Society.

Initially accepted into the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy,
Singleton chose the Navy because of the challenge of flying a jet to and
from an aircraft carrier. However, Singleton¹s dreams of aviation were
derailed after his car was struck by a drunk driver one week before
graduating from high school as class valedictorian. As a result of a broken
collarbone suffered in the accident, he couldn¹t participate in Navy¹s plebe
summer and was subsequently denied admittance to the academy.

Undeterred by his physical limitations as a result of the car accident,
Singleton never gave up and instead enrolled his freshman year at Georgia
Tech University. Once healthy enough to complete the physical requirements
set forth by the Naval Academy in 2004, he transferred to the academy in
Annapolis, Md.

³Zerbin Singleton is the embodiment of character, purpose and
determination,² said Winslow. ³We at Disney¹s Wide World of Sports are proud
to present this honor to a member of our Armed Forces whose ambition and
focus will ultimately lead him to inspiring new heights.²

A three-year starter at slot back, Singleton enters the annual Army-Navy
game on Dec. 1 playing perhaps the best football of his collegiate career.
Primarily utilized as a blocking back the past two seasons, he has compiled
back-to-back 100-yard rushing performances the past two games (at North
Texas and vs. Northern Illinois), along with scoring three touchdowns in
each of those contests. This season, he has rushed 59 times for 423 yards
and eight touchdowns for the nation¹s leading rushing offense (357.4 ypg.).

³I am honored and humbled to be selected for this award,² said Singleton.
³All the credit goes to God and my family.²

Singleton also excels in the classroom where he carries a 3.14 GPA in
aerospace engineering. Last season, he was named Academic All-District by
ESPN the Magazine.

This honor marks the second Disney¹s Wide World of Sports Spirit Award for
the U.S. Naval Academy. In 2001, the U.S. Service Academy football teams
from Air Force, Army and Navy collectively received the Disney Spirit Award
in recognition of their academic, athletic and military commitments
following the tragic events of Sept. 11th.

Disney¹s Wide World of Sports Spirit Award is presented annually to college
football¹s most inspirational figure. Singleton becomes the 12th recipient
of the Disney Spirit Award, joining past honorees Daniel Huffman (1996),
Dwight Collins (1997), Matt Hartl (1998), East Carolina University (1999),
Hameen Ali (2000), the United States Service Academy football teams (2001),
Dewayne White (2002), Neil Parry (2003), Tim Frisby (2004), the Tulane
University football team (2005) and University of Louisville band member
Patrick Henry Hughes (2006).

Huffman, a high school player in Rossville, Ill., sacrificed a promising
football career to donate a
kidney to his ailing grandmother. Collins, a native of Lake Charles, La.,
overcame his loss of hearing to meningitis at 11 months of age to earn a
scholarship to the University of Central Florida as a running back. Hartl,
from Denver, Colo., battled Hodgkin¹s disease throughout his college career
as a fullback at Northwestern University before succumbing to the illness in
August 1999.

The East Carolina football team finished the season in the national rankings
after overcoming the floods and devastation that affected the entire eastern
North Carolina community during Hurricane Floyd in1999.

Ali overcame a troubled youth and poverty-stricken conditions to earn a
football scholarship and a degree from William & Mary.

Dewayne White suffered the loss of his parents, two house fires and serious
injury before matriculating to the University of Louisville where he earned
school records for career sacks and tackles for loss, as well as the 2002
Spirit Award.

Neil Parry overcame the amputation of his right leg to return to San Jose
State to play in six games for the Spartans, while 39-year old Tim Frisby
followed a career in the Army by pursuing a life-long dream to play college
football at South Carolina.

The Tulane University football team played 11 games in 11 different
stadiums, including ³home² games in six different cities after Hurricane
Katrina devastated the team¹s home city of New Orleans.

University of Louisville band member Patrick Henry Hughes captured national
headlines for his inspiring story of determination and remarkable
achievement despite being physically challenged. Despite being born with a
rare genetic disorder that left him with no eyes and the inability to fully
straighten his arms or legs, and with his dad guiding his way, Hughes is a
trumpet player in the University of Louisville marching band, a concert
pianist, a recording artist and, most important, a straight-A student. The
significant role of marching bands amid the landscape of college football,
coupled with Hughes¹ remarkable achievements despite his physical
challenges, made him the overwhelming choice for Disney¹s Spirit Award even
though the award has traditionally been given to a student-athlete.

All-American Matt Stolpinski to Wrestle in NWCA All-Star Classic

News from navysports.com:

Senior captain Matt Stolpinski placed fourth place at the NCAA Championship a year ago to garner All-America honors.

Nov. 2, 2007

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy senior All-American wrestler Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) has received and accepted an invitation to take part in the 42nd edition of the NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the United States Marine Corps slated for Nov. 19, in Eugene, Ore. Navy's team captain, Stolpinski is the 12th different Navy wrestler to be invited to the all-star tournament since its inception in 1967 and the first since Mark Conley in 2002.

"This is truly an honor for both Matt and the Navy wrestling program," said eighth-year Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. "It's an opportunity for Matt to shine among some of the greatest competitors in the sport today. It's also an incredible chance for wrestling fans on the West Coast to see what Navy wrestling is all about. I'm excited for Matt and I know we will be an exceptional representative of the Naval Academy at this prestigious event."

This year's lineup features six top-ranked wrestlers in Division I, one top-ranked wrestler in Division II, eight second-ranked wrestlers from Division I along with four #3's and one #4. In all, 14 different schools will be represented and will comprise athletes from the Big Ten, Big 12, Colonial, EIWA, EWL, Pac 10 and Division II.

There is one pivotal focus of this year's event - save the wrestling program at the University of Oregon. In June, the school announced it was cutting the sport in favor of adding baseball and women's competitive cheer, and that 2007-08 would be the final season of Duck Wrestling in Eugene.

"This is an important event, not only for the sport of wrestling, but for the health and well-being of wrestling in the state of Oregon and around the country," said NWCA President Ron Mirikitani. "There is great tradition at the University of Oregon. National Champions, Olympic Medalists, Olympic Coaches. We're hoping that a great fan presence will show the administration that Oregon needs wrestling and wrestling needs Oregon."

The lineup that's going to be taking to the mat at McArthur Court is solid.

At 125 pounds, returning NCAA champion Paul Donahoe of Nebraska comes in ranked No. 1 in the country after his surprise run to the title last season. He'll take on Jayson Ness, a sophomore from Minnesota ranked fourth in the nation and a fifth-place finisher at the NCAA Championships last March. It is the first appearance for both wrestlers.

At 133 pounds, two of the Big 12's top wrestlers will square off with three-time All-American and returning NCAA runner-up Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State will take on Missouri's two-time All-American Tyler McCormick. Scott is 2-1 lifetime against McCormick and is one of two Cowboys to be represented in the event. Scott's making his second All-Star appearance, losing last year to Penn's Matt Valenti.

At 141 pounds, it's two-time All-American Nathan Morgan. Morgan, ranked third, will face second-ranked Charles Griffin of Hofstra. Griffin defeated Morgan in the third-place match at the 2007 NCAA Division I Championships last March, 6-2, and is the first Hofstra wrestler to compete in the main event of the All-Star Classic since Nick Gallo wrestled in the event in 1977. Morgan, meanwhile, is making his second All-Star appearance. He fell last year to top-ranked Ryan Lang of Northwestern.

At 149 pounds, a pair of Big Ten opponents will tangle as top-ranked Dustin Schlatter, a two-time All-American and 2006 NCAA champion, will face off with second-ranked Josh Churella, a two-time All-American and 2007 NCAA runner-up. It will be Schlatter's second All-Star appearance. Last season, he defeated Oklahoma's Matt Storniolo in Dallas.

At 157 pounds, Wisconsin's NCAA runner-up Craig Henning, ranked second at the weight, will wrestle Illinois' Mike Poeta in another All-Big Ten tussle. It's been six years since Barry Davis has had a wrestler compete in the event - Donny Pritzlaff in 2001.

Second-ranked Eric Tannenbaum of Michigan, ranked second, will take on third-ranked Patrick Pitsch of Arizona State at 165 pounds. The match could draw some fans from nearby Washington as the two-time Pac-10 champion hails from Spanaway, Wash., a four-hour drive up I-5.

Two Eastern conferences are represented at 174 pounds, with returning NCAA finalist and top-ranked Keith Gavin of Pittsburgh against second-ranked Matt Stolpinski of the United States Naval Academy. Gavin is Pitt's first representative since J.J. Fasnacht in 1996, while Stolpinski is the Academy's first since Mark Conley in 2002.

"It's a huge honor to be selected to compete in the All-Star Classic," said Stolpinski, who is a two-time NCAA qualifier and tied the program record with 44 wins a year ago. "I am very excited at the chance to compete against the No. 1 guy in my weight so early in the season. Coach Burnett, as usual, has been getting us in awesome shape throughout the preseason and I feel like we are all ready to show what we can do.

"Keith Gavin is a tough wrestler with great technique," added Stolpinski about his competitor. "I am going to have to go into the match with a solid game plan. I'll have to stick with the basics and keep the pace of the match very high. Its going to be a lot of fun!"

Making his second All-Star Classic is Minnesota's Roger Kish. Last season, Kish fell to Northwestern's Jake Herbert, but the Michigan native will have a familiar foe in his opponent in 2007 - Iowa State's top-ranked sophomore Jake Varner. Varner defeated Kish in overtime in the semifinals of last year's NCAA championships at 184 pounds.

A pair of Big Ten wrestlers will again meet at 197 pounds, as second-ranked Phil Davis, a three-time All-American from Penn State, will face third-ranked Mike Tamillow of Northwestern. This will be Davis second appearance in the All-Star Classic, but he failed to make weight at last year's event. Tamillow was seventh at last year's NCAA championships.

At heavyweight, Division I's top-ranked heavyweight Dustin Fox of Northwestern will have a large challenge in front of him, the top-ranked heavyweight in Division II, Nebraska-Kearney's Tervel Dlagnev. Dlagnev beat Fox in the finals of last year's Midlands championships and is making his third All-Star appearance but first in the main event. In 2005 in Stillwater, Dlagnev beat Central Oklahoma's Josh LeadingFox in the event's only exhibition, while in 2006, the Texan beat Wartburg's Blake Gillis in one of five exhibition matches.

Dlagnev's the first non-Division I wrestler in the event since Emmett Willson of Montana State-Northern (NAIA) in 2004 and the first Division II wrestler to compete since Dan Russell of Portland State in 1990 - the last time Oregon hosted the event.

The event is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start, and tickets are available by calling the Duck ticket office at 1-800-WEB-FOOT (or 541.346.4461 locally) during weekday normal business hours. Prices are $15 for reserved, $10 for Adult General Admission and $5 for Children General Admission (ages 2-18) and UO Students (with a valid UO student ID). For teams of 15 or more, reserved tickets are available for $10 for each ticket if arranged in advance through the UO Athletic Department Ticket Office. Other general ticket information is available at the online at www.GoDucks.com website.

FW: okay guys, hopefully last one for awhile...to clear up confusion...

Alright, to answer a few questions being brought up.

-> As far as we know, media granted by LT Lieb was for this morning only. If
we are granted such privileges, I will let you know ASAP.

-> All laundry still needs to pass out. The more we continue on with our
normal lives and daily jobs as plebes, even in such confusing and crazy
times, the better off we'll be.

-> New chow call schedule to be out soon. I'm making as FEW changes as
possible. Please stick to it when it comes out.

-> I have the SPIRIT POSTER in my room, and EVERYONE'S help is needed so we
can get this done tonight. per Mr. Brandenburg, everyone must do something.

FW: Bancroft Hall-oween -- CDO word

Hey Rockstars,

To reiterate what I put out at morning formation:

  • Lots of Admirals on the yard so look/stay sharp.
  • If you're going to the funeral today, take a look at the Brigade XO's previous email.
  • Keep the Company Area's clean.
  • Halloween time goes at 1915 - 2000 (Do not go to evening meal in costume!).  Come back to company area by 2000 - they're going to enforce study hour hard.
  • You can only trick or treat in Bancroft Hall!  Nobody can go to Captain's Row etc.
  • Be smart with your costume choice and actions during trick or treating.

FW: last thing...

Sorry for yet another e-mail. After Mr. Brandenburg stopped by, he gave me
more information/stuff we have to do.

We need to have a SPIRIT BANNER before the Notre Dame game. It will be put
someone in T-Court and must but put up prior to the team's leaving. It needs
to be really good, and should be about 4 sheets in size. Does anyone have
any sheets left? If not I can go buy them but we'll have to figure out how
to reimburse everyone for stuff...we have to do a banner for the next home
game too.

Here's the gist of it all:

-> EVERYONE NEEDS TO PARTICIPATE IN SOME WAY.
-> WE NEED PAINT AND 4 SHEETS.
-> MR. OLONE AND MR. MURRAY ARE HELPING US.
-> WE NEED A SAYING AN PICTURE FOR THE SHEET. PLEASE THINK UP IDEAS AND
E-MAIL ME!!!

that's all. Thanks for taking the time guys. If we do well, they'll stop
yelling as much and we can make up for them being disappointed about last
week's thing.

RE: p.s. costumes are generally worn to dinner at night too. any questions, see me

FW: important, please read!

Okay, all of this is straight from b*********, so please read it all.

--> Late lights privileges for the week have been revoked, due to our
library issues. This means you must be in your rack by 2300.

--> Tomorrow is Halloween. Make sure you have a costume of some sort and
enough candy for the upperclassman who come around. Our rooms will get
trashed if we don't have enough, and we'll all get in trouble. MAKE SURE YOU
GET ENOUGH CANDY. Go now to the mid store and get some if you haven't
already.

--> If you have any questions on where/when we can sleep/study, etc. consult
Mid Regs. PLEASE DO NOT SLEEP IN THE LIBRARY. We need to remain professional
wherever we are on the yard.

--> Get started thinking on ideas for spirit missions and a spirit spot to
beat army.

presentations for Saturday

Elle and Erica S.: Kim Jong-il
Steven, Brian and Tom- the sub that hit the fishing boat
Sam H, Peter, Alex - Titanic

FW: No signatures= No liberty

Pebbles and Plebes assigned to fifth company,
To the plebes who did finish signature sheets, i.e. Pebbles, good job,
welcome to the company. I expect this to be the beginning of a long line of
success for you three. I also expect you to understand that because you did
your job, you don't get anything special; no one gets rewarded for doing
their job. What you do get is the satisfaction of knowing that you did it
right the first time, on time and the satisfaction of knowing that the rest
of this email does not apply to you. Enjoy your liberty on Saturday.

To the rest of you, I have a lesson to teach you. An apology for not
getting your job done is not good enough here or in the fleet. You all have
no excuse for not completing the task. In addition, things only get worse
if you do not finish tasks the first time, on time, all the time. To hammer
this point home, you will prepare and present to me an eight ('08) minute
presentation on a case study in which a person in a leadership position did
something wrong or failed to do something right or on time and the
ramifications of this mistake. I expect this to be a professional
presentation. You may work in groups of two or three and you may use any
medium you wish, including but not limited to power point or posters, and
you must document all sources. These presentations will take place Saturday
after SMT. Your liberty will not commence until you have finished this
presentation to my satisfaction. I will not sit through the same case study
twice. If you fail to meet these requirements, you will not have any
liberty this weekend.
I chose to send this message at this time on purpose. This is not
supposed to be easy. As always, come see me if you have any questions or
special circumstances which may inhibit you from completing this task and I
will decide if they are valid.

-Training Officer
